Was it a Tornado That Hit the UK?

19/08/2009

On Thursday 30th July the Isle of Lewis was hit with a twister leaving several cars and houses damaged in the evening.

There was bad weather in various parts of the UK, but heavy rain and strong winds caused iron-work and slates to be torn from buildings and a mass power-cut over the town of Stornoway.

One car was overturned, just missing a fuel depot. Numerous windows were smashed and more than 100 children in Cumbria had to be evacuated to a school at midnight. This was due to heavy rain causing rivers to overflow at their campsite near Keswick.

Philip Nightingale, 47, a camper from Blackpool said: “We had planned to stay a week but this morning the water was surrounding us like a lake.

"There are about 200 to 300 people staying here and everyone is packing away."

With more and more bad weather disrupting everyday lives in the UK, it is clear climate change is causing a big problem. The only way to protect yourself is to check you and your home is insured.
