The Local Government Association, warns of the significant risk of flooding for UK homes

16/04/2009

A warning has been issued to the UK Government from the LGA (Local Government Association) regarding the potential risk of flooding for up to 50,000 homes.

The LGA is extremely concerned that not enough is being done to prevent the flooding that occurred in 2007. It has been pointed out that not enough has been done to eradicate the drainage problems of 2 years ago and that we are likely to see a lot of surface water that has nowhere to go, except outwards, which will continue as the rain falls.

Another of the issues surrounding last years flooding, was down to several parties being involved in the maintenance and 'safeguarding' of draining across the country. Nothing was orchestrated between them and this meant that ultimately no one took ownership or responsibility of what was happening.

Landlords, homeowners, water companies and the Environmental Agency now have to work together to ensure that 2007 is not repeated, but it seems as though none of the parties have really taken this forward. If we experience the same heavy down pours of 2007 in 2009, we will no doubt be once again knee deep in it.

Not only was the damage and personal suffering of individuals a traumatic time, but the cost of the damage to the insurance companies hit an excess of £3 billion. A lot of pressure has been put on the UK Government to step in and ensure that flood barriers and defences are in place, but it would seem that nothing as yet has been truly put into place.

As yet, lessons have not been learnt and people up and down the country and nervously await the rain.
