The Environment Agency urge homeowners to get flood aware

11/12/2009

If the unpredictability of the recent flooding wasn't enough to spur on homeowners to get vigil and become flood aware, now the Environment Agency is urging people to get in the know.

Cockermouth's extreme flooding was said to have had a 1 in 1000 chance of happening, but yet it still happened and Cockermouth was completely unprepared for the influx of rain and water.

The Environment Agency wants people to become proactive in protecting themselves and their community from flooding. Their website is full of information on how to protect yourself and precautions that you can take as well as a flood alert system. They want people to sign up to these notifications, which you can do either by ringing the Floodline on 0845 988 1188 or registering online.

The idea is that you sign up to the flood warning system as well as making a plan of action for what to do, should flooding occur as once the water is at your front door there is not much that you can do.

Councils also have flood protection products that people can buy instead of relying on the usual sandbags to keep the water at bay. Anyone that has suffered at the hands of a flood will understand just how essential protection is. A small investment now could be the difference between paying thousands of pounds to repair damage done by flooding or losing photographs and items of personal value.

The word from the Environment Agency is that everyone should get prepared and find out if they are indeed at risk. With 1 in 6 homes reportedly at risk from flooding, everyone should be doing their bit.
