Just when you think we had it bad this year you hear the news from down under.

Queensland, in Australia, has been battered by fierce storms for over a week, the high winds and flooding which accompanied the storms have caused vast amounts of physical damage to property, flood damage and even has led to two deaths.

At least 30,000 people to date have filed insurance claims for storm insurance and flood damage of up to a quarter of a billion dollars.

Schools were evacuated whilst a four year old girl was drowned by a burst dam.

Only last year, following huge storms, one of Australia's largest insurance companies announced that it was increasing its own insurance cover to protect itself from future storms.

Suncorp had already sidelined a $240 million dollar fund to cover storms which, under the circumstances, has proven to have been a wise move.

The Queensland premier,,, Anna Bligh, has urged insurance companies to deal with the victims of this latest harsh weather :
"Now is the time for compassion ... I expect them to have a generous and human response to this".

The UK was faced this past year, yet again with high levels of storm damage, leading to record breaking insurance claims.

It is now the insurance companies themselves who need to look to their levels of cover.
