Protecting Us From More Flooding
Work is being carried out in the West of England to reduce the flooding that we have witnessed over the past year.
The Environment Agency bosses have said that they are looking at accelerating the work that needs to be done to protect the homes at risk from flooding.
The Government, who are working with the Environment Agency, are being called to bring forward plans to implement vital flood protection projects.
The talks come after heavy rainfall last week brought 6ft high hailstone drifts and much flooding across the region.
As global warming continues, the unexpected and vicious weather will no doubt cause increasing problems for those in flood prone areas, particularly during the Summer months.
The Governments knows that it cannot plan for usual events, like the hailstorms of last week, but we can protect ourselves against the eventuality that there will be more rain and that there will be more extreme weather events.
Alistair Darling announced last month that he would spend £800 million over three years to until 2010/2011 on protecting us from flooding, but many have suggested that this will not be enough. The amount that has been calculated to spend on flood defences was in line with a study carried out a few years ago, and so it is suspected that this amount is out of date. The Government and Environment Agency will now have to look at the current climate change to reassess their investment strategy.
Recommendations made by the Pitt Review into last year’s flooding will need to be closely looked at and this will include setting up the ability to warn people by automated telephone calls about the imminent risk of flooding. Much of the preparation for flooding will include how to set up a flood pack and how to turn off your water mains.
Many of those who are still cleaning up from the flooding, will say that this is all too late for them, but with many home still proposed for flood plains we have to start protecting ourselves from the destruction.
