One in Six UK Homes are at Risk from Flooding

24/06/2009

According to the Environment Agency, 1 in 6 homes are at risk of flooding in the UK and this will only worsen as global warming takes more of a hold on the planet.

As global warming is altering rainfall, increasing coastal erosion and raising sea levels, the focus will turn locally to rivers, and if defences aren't in place much damage will be caused to businesses and homes.

With this in mind, it is estimated that damage caused to businesses and homes from rivers bursting their banks is likely to rise to £4 billion a year in 2035 (from £2.5 billion today). The Government even published a 24 page report, specifying that the recommended annual budget for flood defence be increased to £1 billion.

By 2080 it is predicted that temperatures in the southeast will rise by as much as 4 degrees Celsius, that sea levels will climb by 36 centimetres and the average winter rainfall in the northwest will grow by as much as 16%.

The risk of flooding and coastal erosion will continue to grow, due to the rising sea levels and frequent, often torrential storms. Therefore, there are important measures needed to ensure that people and communities are protected.

Much spending is needed to control river damage, coastal defences and flooding warning management - which could spare the Government £180 billion in damages over the next century.
