Insurers Brace Themselves as Flash Flood Warnings are Issued

14/08/2008

Insurers are once again bracing themselves, as yet more flooding hits the country causing damage and destruction and clearing everything in its path.

The recent weather has brought back the memory of last Summer’s flooding and for those who fell victim to it, many are still waiting to move back into their homes.

You would be forgiven if you thought that it were in fact October or November, with the only thing setting it apart from these months being leaves on the trees, but still the rain rages on.

Insurance companies are bracing themselves as the bad weather is set to continue well into next week.

There have been downpours and even flash flooding on main roads in York as the torrential rain ravaged the country.

This kind of weather is starting to become expected for the Summer, but Yorkshire got a shock when flash flooding hit their roads and they experienced 30mm of rain in a day, which is roughly a month’s rainfall.

York city closed several of the major streets during rush hour, adding to the drama caused by the rain. The fire services were called too, after flooding in a vestibule of York Minster set off the fire alarms.

Glasgow is also experiencing the bad weather and has issued one severe flood warning and six further flood warnings have also been issue around the rest of Scotland.

Last month the UK saw heavy rainfall but this month’s seems to have eclipsed this, with some major papers calling the torrential downpours ‘monsoons’ and many areas receiving four fifths of a month’s rain in just one day!

Despite the weather, many Brits have opted to holiday in the UK this Summer and with typical British ‘stiff upper lip’ they have got on with enjoying their holiday regardless of what the weather throws at them.

The mixture of sunshine and then showers seems to lure people into the sun, only to catch them out later with heavy rain and no umbrella.
