Homes Evacuated Due to Risk of Flooding
Heavy rain last week meant that many people were evacuated from their homes in order to avoid being stranded or caught in the flood water.
Flooding brought parts of Essex under water and subsequently many houses were evactuated and major roads were closed.
In Steeple Bumpstead, 12 people had to leave their homes, finding additional housing for the night after the threat of flooding to their homes.
The occupants of 5 bungalows in Clacton had to be evacuated to the town hall, following the flood warning. Many of the other bungalows in the vicinity were also affected, but residents either refused to leave or decided to take refuge with family members.
Police advised motorists to take extra care on the roads as the roads filled with deep water and made the conditions extremely dangerous.
The rivers Chelmer and Can were put on high alert, after server flooding was expected and seven flood warnings were put in place around Essex County.
The Essex Fire Service received more than 270 flood related calls, with many people reporting that they were stranded in cars or that their homes were caught up in the flooding. The word from the Emergency Services was to observe some common sense and avoid driving through flood water, which could easily have things to obstruct vehicles in submerged in the water.
