Flood Warnings Remain in Place

03/03/2010

Despite what appears to be a respite in the weather, flood alerts are still very much in force.

Following the deluge of rain that hit the UK this weekend, there are still 43 flood warnings in place across England and Wales.

The major risk is to the Thames area and East Anglia and the River Arun in West Sussex, which is still coping with the rainfall from the weekend.

The full scale of the weather front was largely missed by the UK, despite the flood warning, although one woman died when her land rover was carried away by a normally mild stream. France bore the brunt and has reported 50 deaths at the hands of the weather, with Spain, Portugal and Germany also recording fatalities.

The Thames Barrier was also closed on Saturday night, amid the flood warnings up and down the country.

The rainfall for February was 20% higher than the average, with Okehampton in Devon reaching 157mm.

Although the rain is currently being kept at bay, more is predicted as we get further into March as well as freezing temperatures.
