Fire Home Insurance Claims on the Rise

24/03/2009

A recently published report has shown that there has been a big increase in home insurance claims for fire damage.

The report shows the growing financial cost of such an event happening. The AIB (The Association of British Insurers) has revealed that the fire damage cost £408 million last year alone. This is a 17% increase on the previous year and if commercial and non residential buildings are included then the collective cost is a record £1.3 billion - which is a 16% increase from last year.

Nick Starling, the director of general insurance and health at The AIB said that the figures are 'alarming' and makes managing fire insurance even more important.

The AIB believe that the increase in large scale fires that have put lives at risk, which they have seen in the last year has been caused by arson and fraud.

The AIB have advised homeowners to ensure that they are covered by their home insurance for events such as extreme weather like snow, high winds and heavy rain.
