Can anyone smell smoke?

For anyone, learning that your home is on fire is a nightmare. But when that nightmare is a reality, returning to the ruins of your home and sieving through the debris trying to save loved possessions is one of the most heart-wrenching experiences you can go through.

For Geoffrey and Judy Lean, this was their reality. The couple were on a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales when the phone call came from the Police, enquiring as to whether they knew the whereabouts of their children. It suddenly became painfully apparent that their home in Surrey was on fire.

The Lean's daughter was at University and their son had called the previous night to say that he was going to extend his stay with friends in Torquay, so as the couple returned from their holiday they counted their blessings.

On the long drive home the couple made a pact. A pact that they say has carried them through the ordeal and given them the strength to rebuild their lives and ultimately their home.

Geoffrey and Judy decided that whatever needed to be done to reconstruct their home, they would go as green as possible. In fact, the couple have started the laborious and exhausting process of dismantling their home themselves in order to recycle and reuse what they can to rebuild their home.

Each brick has been cleaned and is ready to be used to rebuild their home and eleven huge 'bags' sit in the grounds of the house labelled anything from fabric and cardboard to glass and metal. The plan is to reuse whatever can be reused and create a pioneering zero-carbon replacement.

The Lean's have very gallantly turned around this tragedy and are rebuilding their home and their lives in the most eco friendly way that they can.
