A £100million Flood Prevention scheme for Leeds.

11/05/2009

The Environment Agency and Leeds county council have unveiled a £100million Flood Prevention plan.

To prevent the damage caused by the flooding in Leeds last Summer, the Environment Agency and Leeds City Council have recently set up a flood prevention scheme.

Over the last few years, Leeds has suffered a number of floods and it has become increasingly urgent for the city to have better flood protection facilities to avoid any further human suffering or damage to property.

The new program-which is not the final scheme- plans to give people their say on the proposal and then will allow them come to an agreement as to the best way forward.

People views and suggestions will be taken into account before the final plan is submitted for Goverment approval.

This way allows people to give their opinion and say if the proposed plan is visually acceptable.

Leeds currently has no flood defence stratregies in place and this scheme- which will cost £100m will allow such facilities to be built to protect the city from flooding . The defences will also be as aesthetically pleasing as possible.

To prevent flooding , the Environment Agency have decided to set up protection facilities that are appropriate to the environment and fit in with the surrounding areas- so there will be landscaped areas, and terraced spots that can be used as seating areas.

The Environment Agency and city council are also organising events in different places to inform people of the new scheme and increase public awareness to the issue of flooding .

For those who can't attend these two events, the proposal will be available at the Leeds Central Library until September.

Once the project is approved by the Government, work should start on 2011.
