Loss Assessors Advice
Flood Insurance Claims Advice
With flooding currently dominating the headlines we are all aware of the possibility of being hit by flooding. In fact many who were never before affected by flooding, suddenly have been and with catastrophic consequences.
The advice from the Association of British Insurers to those who have suffered flood damage following the recent heavy rain is as follows:
- Contact your insurer as soon as possible. The majority of insurers have a 24 helpline for support and advice in the event of such an incident. They will be able to arrange for any emergency repairs and someone to come and assess the damage.
- If you need to make any emergency repairs, then keep your receipts and you will be able to claim these back within your insurance claim.
- If you need to find somewhere else to stay, then your insurance should cover this (up to a limit).
- If your car has been swept up in the flooding, then your comprehensive motor insurance should cover any damage.
- Do not use the electricity or water supplies in a property until the all clear has been given.
- Flood water picks up everything, so make sure that a property is properly disinfected before returning to it.
- A flooded property will take some time to dry out. Where possible heat rooms and don’t rush to redecorate. Keep doors and windows open to air the property.
The main word coming from the ABI is to not put people at risk, a sentiment echoed by us here at AKA Assisted Claims.
